Item Cursing Athenians: An enquiry into the position and role of curse tablets in Classical Athenian religion and society from the perspectives of the Underworld and gender(2024-06-28) Roefs, N.This thesis investigates the role and position of curse tablets in Classical Athenian religion and society. Curse tablets usually take the form of a thin sheet of lead that is inscribed with a binding spell and subsequently folded or rolled, ritually pierced with a nail, and deposited underground, often in graves, tombs, or wells. A binding spell is meant to bind or restrain a rival in order to disadvantage them in a number of possible situations, the most common of which are: in legal proceedings, in matters of love, in business rivalries, and in competitions in theatre and sport. This research aims to show how these tablets were not a niche of society or a wastebasket of religion. They were an integral part of Athenian society, and everyone knew of their existence. They were used by people from all layers of society and by both men and women.Item Pietje Smids - trouwen in een bruin wandelkostuum(2024-07-15) Bionda, H.J.W.De Friese landvrouw Pietje Smids geeft op 2 mei 1917 het ja-woord aan de tuinbouwer en tabaksteler Hendrik Gorter. Opmerkelijk genoeg kiest Pietje ervoor om op haar huwelijksdag geen witte trouwjapon te dragen maar een bruin zijde wandelkostuum, die zij kocht bij Gebroeders Ibelings in Leeuwarden. Het kostuum, dat onderdeel uitmaakt van de collectie van het Fries Museum roept verschillende vraagstukken op. Welke rol speelde de emancipatiebeweging, de Eerste Wereldoorlog en de toenemende sportmogelijkheden in de ontwikkelingen van het wandelkostuum en welke omstandigheden kunnen verklaren waarom Pietje Smids koos om hierin te trouwen? Het kostuum en de draagster kunnen geplaatst worden in meerdere grote ontwikkelingen en vormt daarmee een bijdrage aan de Nederlandse kostuumgeschiedenis. Het bruine wandelkostuum zal waarschijnlijk vanuit praktische overwegingen gekozen zijn.Item Sinistere stillevens en confronterende kabinetten: De diorama's van Frederick Ruysch binnen de verzamelcultuur van de Nederlandse Republiek(2023-07-13) Aar, van, M.De confronterende diorama's met skeletten van foetussen gemaakt door de Nederlandse anatomist Frederick Ruysch, aan het einde van de zeventiende eeuw hebben, de afgelopen jaren steeds meer aandacht gekregen door de lugubere en unieke kwaliteiten van de kunstwerken. In een landschap lijkend op de natuur, maar vervaardigd uit onderdelen gemaakt door het menselijk lichaam, dragen de foetussen attributen en deviezen waarmee verwezen wordt naar de Vanitas- en Memento Mori-traditie. De drie stillevens waarvan prenten zijn gemaakt staan centraal in deze scriptie. Naast het beschrijven van de diorama’s worden de rest van de preparaten in de verzameling van Ruysch beschreven, die vaak werden voorzien van decoratieve elementen en vanitas-symboliek. Er wordt gekeken naar hoe de stillevens van Ruysch binnen zijn eigen collectie zijn verwerkt. Daarnaast wordt er gekeken naar hoe de verzamelcultuur in Nederland er op dat moment uitzag. Uiteindelijk worden de diorama's ingebed in de bredere context van deze verzamelcultuur.Item “Expedition to Feline Tribe Matses”: Colonial Echoes in Indigenous Tourism Representations(2024-07-08) Vinke, B.This paper aims to examine the representation of the Indigenous group Matses on travel tour websites. The Matses are a tribal community native to Peru and Brazil, and they have faced persecution throughout the years, which has historically caused them to be relatively reclusive. Nowadays, you can visit their reserve with expeditions you can book through websites. Through analysis of the visual and textual representations of the Matses on one of these sites called Jungle Reps, this study demonstrates that the narratives utilized around this group are mostly based on stereotypes and myths, with the myths of the ‘noble s*vage’ and the “unpolluted” appearing most frequently. As this representation can have real-world implications, this study hopes to contribute to the conversation around Indigenous tourism in a meaningful way.Item Irony and Sincerity in Autofictional Graphic Narratives: A Metamodern Reading of Zoe Thorogood’s It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth (2022)(2024-07-04) Doorenmalen, van, M.This thesis examines metamodernity in Zoe Thorogood's 2022 graphic novel ‘It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth’. The oscillation between irony and sincerity, combined with the work's autofictional character, places the novel in a metamodern framework. The first chapter of this research focuses on autofictionality, and examines how Thorogood explores her place in the world by using self-reflexivity and identity fragmentation. The second chapter then analyzes how the metamodern oscillation between irony and sincerity strengthens the graphic novel’s narrative. Comparing and combining these chapters, the thesis then concludes on the main research question concerning how the metamodern oscillation between irony and sincerity contributes to and reinforces the autofictional character of ‘It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth’. The analysis of the novel, supported by the theories of various academics from the fields of metamodernism, autofiction, and graphic narratives, highlights the significance of metamodern elements in contemporary graphic narratives.
