Abstract
This study examined the association between experiencing a disruptive private life event and work ability and the interacting roles of developmental I-deals, flexibility I-deals, and reduced workload I-deals. I hypothesized that experiencing a disruptive private life event (e.g. birth of a child or illness) is negatively related to work ability based on the work-home resources model. I also expected that disruptive private life events and work ability will not be related anymore after implementing I-deals. The association is tested by collecting data from a questionnaire with a sample of 303 participants. Results showed that there is a negative association between experiencing a disruptive private life event and work ability. Besides, results showed that when developmental I-deals are used often, disruptive private life events and work ability will not be related anymore. Furthermore, results showed that flexibility I-deals and reduced workload I-deals could not remove the association between disruptive private life events and work ability. The lack of effect of flexibility I-deals could be due to different sectors and higher expectations from the organization. The lack of effect of reduced workload I-deals could be due to a lack of distraction and self-managing teams.
