Abstract
This thesis investigates how the European Commission’s framing of migration in key policy documents — the European Agenda on Migration and the New Pact on Migration and Asylum — contributes to the broader themes of populism, Fortress Europe, and the migration crisis narrative. Using Entman’s framing theory, the research uses three predefined dominant frames: securitisation, criminalisation, and externalisation. Through a frame analysis of the official communications this study reveals how these frames are structured and in what way they reinforce populism, Fortress Europe and the migration crisis narrative.
