Abstract
This thesis seeks to explain the indigenous Khoisan community’s increased politicisation of the Dutch colonial past in South Africa since 2018. Notably, the diplomatic mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Consulate-General and Embassy in South Africa, increasingly receive requests from Khoisan representatives, community leaders and activists who demand international recognition, support, and financial reparations. Moreover, this thesis aims to uncover the reasons and underlying factors contributing to the Khoisan community’s increased politicisation. Furthermore, this thesis seeks to understand the timing of the increased politicization, 217 years after the end of Dutch colonialism in South Africa. The study draws on a combination of methodologies and theories, which is aimed to include the different perspectives and aspects related to this topic. Additionally, this study seeks to discover the effect of an internalized norm and the influence of global indigenous rights movements on this phenomenon.
