Abstract

In this thesis, the research question “What is the role of education in the process of reintegration of internally displaced persons?” is answered. To answer this question, reintegration is seen as a specific form of socialization, in which education is an important socializing agent. The focus of this thesis is on internally displaced persons in Nigeria. After more than a decade of violence by Boko Haram, Nigeria is home to approximately 2.1 to 3.2 million people that are internally displaced. In order to answer the research question, a qualitative content analysis was conducted. Based on this analysis, this thesis identified the trap of being internally displaced, in which the limited opportunities for making a livelihood that are the result of internal displacement result in limited access to education, which in turn creates limited opportunities for decent employment and livelihood in the future. Education as a socializing agent does have the potential to contribute to reintegrating into a host community, but the trap of internal displacement at present results in circumstances that prevent the potential of education from being fully realised.
