Abstract
In quest of what the current humanitarian crisis at the Aegean islands (with epicenter in Moria refugee camp of Lesvos) consists of, this thesis attempts to crystallize the EU external border regime and its refugee crisis management. This research is founded upon the interweaving of Postcolonial Governmentalité along with the B/Ordering and Othering processes. This hybrid framework is further expanded with the threefold EU border mechanism, comprised of the “paper border”, the “iron border” and the “border camp”. In practice, the “paper border” theory is interweaved with the Dublin System, the “iron border” with the EU Turkey Deal and the “border camp” with the EU Hotspot Approach, in order to target the exact deficiencies of the EU management of the crisis. The threefold mechanism is further implemented on the national context, in order to finally define the level at which the Greek crisis management constitutes a microcosmos of the EU external border regime. This thesis provides insights and recommendations which target the deficiencies of both the EU-Greek refugee crisis management.
