Abstract

The thesis that lies before you examines the connections between theoretical concepts of cultural distance, othering and coexistence in the context of the dormant fisherman’s village of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. Trincomalee knows mixed demographics, with communities of the four major religions; Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Inter-community relations, levels of trust and connectedness in daily life are all examined and discussed.
