Anthropogenic climate change and human behavior are destroying the natural world, which is why it is essential to protect Earth’s biodiversity. Important actors in nature conservation are zoos. In this research, Burgers’ Zoo is the main case study, besides the exemplary cases Ouwehands Dierenpark and WILDLANDS Emmen. Burgers’ Zoo is being researched for its nature conservation and sustainability initiatives, analyzed with the concepts of CSR and greenwashing. Furthermore, it was researched what the Dutch government-mandated policy guidelines are for Dutch zoos, and the changing role of zoos. Through the research methods of content analysis, observations, and interviews, it became clear that zoos have become not only educational research centers, but also places where people can connect to nature. Burgers’ Zoo, together with Ouwehands and WILDLANDS, are supporting in-situ nature conservation projects all over the globe. Furthermore, Burgers’ Zoo is the owner of the golden certificate of Duurzaam Gastvrij, making it a sustainable actor. But despite this, Burgers’ Zoo is striving to become more sustainable every day and to increase its positive impact on society, nature, and the environment through Burgers’ Zoo's sheer internal motivation. Burgers’ Zoo truly is a socially responsible zoo and a leader in nature conservation.
