Abstract
In this thesis the Haagse Passage is discussed as an important glass building of the late nineteenth century. The Passage is discussed as a predominant piece of commercial architecture in the Netherlands, as a part of the global phenomenon of 'the arcades' starting in the nineteenth century in Paris. The structure is seen as an important building in the line of glass architecture, starting at green houses, which grow into glazed exhibition buildings such as the Crystal Palace. In the next chapter the duality of the building is discussed: the glass roof and the neo-classical base. In the last part the building is seen as a microcosm for capitalism and consumption, with a focus on a new, female, shopping space in the late nineteenth century.
