Brain drain is the concept of highly educated people migrating from a developing country towards a more developed country. This research will focus on the city of Semarang and will look at brain drain as the migration of higher educated people from the developing city of Semarang towards the more developed city of Jakarta. This research will look at the economic and social reasons why people would want to migrate. The specific focus is on the social reasons, namely the influence of family and friends. The New Economic Labour Migration theory states that the household makes the decision to migrate or not instead of the individual. This theory will be tested for the case of higher educated people in Semarang. This research will also look at the duration of the migration and those impact on the current theory of Brain Drain.en_US
