dc.description.abstractThis master’s thesis answers the research question: How does the discourse of the unreached manifests and reinforces itself on Dutch websites offering short-term mission trips? The following sub-question helped to answer this: What textual and visual communication patterns on Dutch websites offering short-term mission trips, add to the manifestation and reinforcement of the discourse of the unreached? A multimodal critical discourse analysis was performed on five Dutch websites offering short-term mission trips. The five textual patterns found that manifest and reinforce the discourse of the unreached are that of descriptions of the unreached, biblical references, being in need and being needed, adventure and discovery, and collaboration. The five visual patterns that manifest and reinforce the discourse of the unreached include world maps, ethnic portraits, the (white) saviour, the Bible, praying and evangelising, and togetherness and friendliness. The interpretation uncovered what was left unsaid or unshown on the websites. Additionally, this interpretation allowed insight into the way the short-term mission trips are being promoted and how this promotion perpetuates colonial discourse.
