Abstract
This qualitative research focuses on community gardens within the municipality of Nijmegen and the appearance of waiting lists in the process of getting access to a community garden. As every community garden has such a waiting list with wait times of up to 15 years, this research tend to search for the underlying reasons for the appearance of those lists. The aim is to make recommendations to the board of each community garden under study.
After conducting and analyzing the interviews, it become clear that the size of a garden parcel and the total number of gardens within a community garden influence the length of a waiting list. Gardens with more smaller parcels tend to have shorter waiting lists than gardens with bigger and less parcels. In order to create more parcels, community gardens can divide gardens to avoid waiting lists. The policy of a community garden determines to what extent the flow of people is sustained, as some gardens have better elaborated policies than other gardens. It is recommended to further elaborate on the policy, especially on how a steady flow of people can be sustained.
