Abstract

Labour shortage keeps increasing because people stop working or work less, which is also the case for women who recently had a baby. This study aimed to investigate the association of having a baby with intrinsic motivation at work amongst women with an exploration of the moderating effect of job crafting. A potential motivational process was examined of four types of job crafting that could weaken the association of having a baby with intrinsic motivation at work. To test hypotheses, the researcher collected primary data through online questionnaires with a sample of 199 participants, consisting of women from 20-64 years. Contrary to the expectations, the results indicate that there is no (negative) significant result on the association of having a baby with the intrinsic motivation at work. Besides, I expected that all four types of job crafting would have a buffering effect on the association of having a baby with intrinsic motivation, yet no significant results were revealed. Nonetheless, two non-hypothesized effects of increasing structural job resources and decreasing hindering job demands on intrinsic motivation at work were found. These findings indicate that job crafting interventions can be valuable for organisations as it is associated with intrinsic motivation at work.
