Abstract
The aim of this study is to gain more insight into inclusive leadership, by interviewing managers about their perspectives on the barriers to and facilitators of inclusive leadership, guided by the following research question: “How do managers see their own inclusive leadership behaviors and what do they perceive as the barriers to and facilitators of inclusive leadership?”. The findings provide insights into how managers perceive their own style of leadership in relation to diversity and inclusion and what barriers and facilitators they come across in working towards inclusive leadership. Barriers that were found during this study were: not having a shared vision on inclusive leadership, a lack of knowledge and awareness with managers themselves, policies and procedures that were not aligned. Facilitators like inclusive leadership training, tools, aligned HR practices and pressure from top management were mentioned as being helpful. Lowering organizational barriers or providing facilitators can help managers in performing inclusive leadership behaviors, but this is not everything. Having the right tools is necessary, but not sufficient. Managers should take their own responsibility to educate themselves as well, instead of waiting for the perfect conditions for inclusion.
