Abstract

When considering altruism in animals, scientists look at fitness and outcomes. This type of altruism is called biological altruism. With humans, however, scientists and philosophers look at motivations behind the behavior, to determine whether an act was truly altruistic. This is referred to as psychological altruism. Since there is an active mind involved in the decision making processes, some philosophers have argued that psychological altruism is something beyond physical evolution. I argue against this and provide an evolutionary explanation of psychological altruism.
