Abstract

Due to more severe and frequent natural disasters, and with more people living in fragile areas than ever, the ability of a community to bounce back becomes increasingly important. Therefore, this study focusses on how social resilience plays out on community level, individual level and units of analysis in between, such as a company, for the tourist-oriented community in Gili Air, Indonesia. This community is reviving from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in August 2018. In this research it is investigated what strategies and dimensions are present regarding social resilience in the respective community. The chosen method is a qualitative ethnographical single-sited case study. This was carried out through semi-structured interviews with the involved actors in the tourists-oriented community and with external actors who can influence the members resilience such as government institutions. This research shows the recovery disparities between actors within the community and highlights the importance of connectedness to the ‘outside world’ in one’s ability to recover from the disaster. Furthermore, it shows and reasons why the community was willing to take action to improve their situation, and shows what role the government institutions played to help the individuals.
