Abstract
In the field of Corporate Sustainability, the role of leadership in the process of Corporate Sustainability (CS) strategy implementation is underrepresented in literature. Therefore, the aim of this research was to clarify the concept of transformational leadership in Corporate Sustainability strategy implementation. Next to leadership, the role of integration mechanisms has been researched as these mechanisms can stimulate the integration of sustainability within an organisation by coordinating and supporting CS strategy implementation. This study contributes to literature by clarifying these concepts in CS strategy implementation based on empirical data gathered through document-analysis and interviews. First, the study points to the importance of all four transformational leadership components and to the role of management and lower level managers in engaging and involving employees in the process of CS strategy implementation. Second, four specific integration mechanisms are commonly used to integrate sustainability within an organisation. However, no undoubtedly clear pattern can be found which links certain integration mechanisms specifically to the implementation of certain CS strategies. Third, a two-fold perspective on transformational leadership is proposed. One side reflects transformational leadership as we are familiar with from literature, whereas the other side reflects an external perspective whereby an organisation can either be a leader or an example for organisations in addressing sustainability and driving the sustainability transition.
