Abstract
With this thesis, my two years of stay in the Netherlands and my master’s program in Comparative Politics comes to an end. The years I spent here was very enriching. I learnt a lot of new information, gained many skills which helped me to approach my passion for politics more professionally and analytically. I believe that this thesis is the concrete evidence of my ability to master them and put them into use. This thesis is the largest academic project that I have completed so far. Therefore, it had been very challenging since I struggled a lot to put my thoughts into a framework that all the readers could understand the logic behind this thesis. It took quite long for me to finish this thesis because I lost my way while focusing on details and sometimes, I felt too depressed to work on my thesis. Nevertheless, I was able to finish my thesis successfully. I hope that this thesis would enrich the knowledge in the scientific community and would help to raise awareness regarding the overall status of women in the world. Even though the master thesis is an individual project, several people helped me to find my way in finishing this thesis and pursue my dreams no matter what. First of all, I would like to thank Professor Monique Leyenaar for her guidance, care and support during my writing process. I could not arrive at this point without her crucial remarks and valuable suggestions. I appreciated her positivity and understanding each time we met. Therefore, I want to express my gratitude for that. Secondly, I must thank all my family in Turkey. However, special thanks go to the women of my life- my grandmother Fatma Sözen, who taught me to be strong and confident while searching my path in life. And my mother Meral Sözen who always inspired me to stay positive and follow my dreams passionately no matter what. I want to express my gratitude for not only the women but also for the man of my life -my big brother and best friend- Mustafa Ertemiz since I was a child I always look up to him; therefore, without him, I could not be the person that I am today. I want to thank all my friends, with who I could discuss the topic of my thesis, and my study progress both in Turkey and the Netherlands. In no particular order: Koray Kul, Melisa Akçam, Çağlayan Tuna, July Bouquin, Ross Alexander and Jenifer Greving.
