Abstract
This bachelor thesis considers the rise of interaction in recent reflective post 9/11 works, following Elise Silva’s statement that more and more artists seem to reflect on the terrorist attacks by embedding various levels of communication in their works. In doing so, they reject Jean Baudrillard’s notion of the static image – the notion that 9/11 has turned into a hollow event because of excessive media coverage and intense repetition of limited images. In four chapters, this thesis analyses in what manner Silva’s levels can be found in the libretto, music and scenery of the musical Come From Away, which tells the story of plane passengers that were diverted to Newfoundland after the terrorist attacks. By elaborating on the levels actor/audience, text/reader, terrorist/victim and reality/fiction, and concluding that all four are represented in Come From Away, it can be said that the musical follows Elise Silva’s pattern, subsequently rejecting Baudrillard’s notion.
