Abstract

This Master’s thesis provides an in-depth examination of the Republican Party by focusing on three aspects – the past, present, and future. The political realignment theory forms the theoretical framework as it is as a useful tool for examining the GOP and American political history. Chapter two – past – provides a historical analysis of the GOP from 1900 until the twenty-first century in the context of the realignment theory, and it is argued that the roots of the present-day coalition of the party can be traced back to the 1960s. Chapter three – present – dives into the factions of the contemporary Republican Party. Because there is no universal consensus on the factional makeup of the GOP, I present my own factional model of the party. Chapter four – future – explores the potential future of the party by looking at different aspects such as the realignment theory and the changing demographic nature of the U.S.
