Abstract
During election campaigns, politicians are known to make use of many metaphors to gain votes.
However, the use, category and nature of the metaphors (positive or negative) might differ between politicians with different political viewpoints.
Analyzing a spoken debate about immigration between a liberal-right and socialist-left politician during the Dutch elections of 2017, this study aimed to determine if there was a significant difference in the use of metaphors, as well as their category and nature between a liberal-right and socialist-left political viewpoint.
Using the Metaphor Identification Procedure, the metaphors used by both politicians were identified, which category and nature were then determined by qualitative analyses.
A Chi-square test did not show significant differences in the use of metaphors between liberal-right and socialist-left, however, the liberal-right politician used significantly more positive metaphors.
Ultimately, metaphors related to the Netherlands were often occurring, setting the stage for a new category of metaphors.
