Abstract

The topic of the thesis is performance evaluation of knowledge management in a non-profit organization. As non-profit organization didn’t receive much attention in literature on performance evaluation, this thesis seeks to increase knowledge on this terrain. Multiple frameworks of either performance measurement in non-profit organizations or knowledge management in non-profit organizations are discussed. As the goal of this thesis was to see the effects of knowledge management on the organization, a cases study was used. The organization studied is a Dutch housing corporation which has just implemented knowledge management. Multiple interviews were held among those involved in the development of knowledge management and those who had to face the consequences of knowledge management. Findings point to the absence of performance measurement. The people in the organization see performance measurement as difficult and believe in the positive effect of knowledge management on performance. This is not in line with literature, which states the importance of performance evaluation of knowledge management, as this can be the most important signal of a malfunctioning system. The results of this thesis however can’t be used to draw broader conclusions about non-profit organizations or knowledge management, as only one organization was studied.
