Abstract
This research explores how global virtual teams can align their objectives with organizational strategy to increase their employability. The primary objective is to understand the mechanisms, conditions, and practices that enable this strategic alignment and foster team-level employability.
A qualitative, deductive methodology was employed, utilizing a single embedded case study at Avisto EE, a software engineering firm in Serbia. Data was gathered through ten semi-structured interviews with employees at different hierarchical levels, systematically coded and analysed.
The findings indicate that strategic alignment is primarily achieved through the rigorous application of agile methodologies like Scrum, which provide transparency and structure. However, the success of these formal processes is critically dependent on a foundation of human and social capital, particularly trust and open communication, which mitigate the inherent challenges of GVTs. Furthermore the managers role was identified as essential for translating client needs into clear, actionable tasks.
The study concludes that strategic alignment and team-level employability are mutually reinforcing. GVTs successfully align when structured processes are supported by a people-centric culture that prioritizes trust. This strategic alignment enhances team-level employability by developing soft skills alongside technical expertise, making the team more adaptable, reliable and therefore more valuable to the organization.
