Abstract
This thesis thoroughly explores and describes the series of six multimedia works called Les Douleurs Contemporaines, created by Moniek Toebosch from 1995 through 2001. Toebosch's art practice shifted to more serious and somber subject matter during this time in her career. This series of works is examplary for this shift.
As a limited amount of literature has appeared on her work in the series, this thesis is based on the use of sources found in archival and primary material such as letters, interviews, images, sound files, and other resources to assess the workings and contents of each work in the series. Furthermore, the works under discussion will be analyzed through the perspective of a theoretical framework based on affect theory.
In conclusion, the Les Douleurs Contemporaines series operates on various levels: physically, conceptually, participatively, and affectively. Through her innovative use of affective strategies, her own voice, sound, materiality, and installations, Toebosch transforms art into a medium for thoughtful engagement with the intricacies of the human experience of sorrow.
