Abstract

this essay aims to show the early relationship between the Muslim rulers and the Coptic patriarchs just after the Muslim conquest of Egypt. In this essay I show that seeds of friction between Muslim rulers and the Coptic church were sown much earlier than other writers suggest. Focussing primarily on the coptic perspective and sources from this time, the sources show how the coptic patriachs were slowly coming under threat from the muslim ryulers, especially through increasing taxation and physical violence.
