Abstract
EHRs are extensively used by elderlycare organizations, which has an impact on the experience of technostress among its elderlycare professionals. There has been a lack of research on EHR related technostress in the context of elderlycare, with limited focus on the dynamics of technostressors caused by the elderlycare professionals that navigate these stressors. Therefore, this study examines how elderlycare professionals navigate challenge and hindrance technostressors when working with an EHR. A qualitative study was conducted within a Dutch elderlycare organization, using interviews, document analysis, and an observation. The results show that elderlycare professionals experience all five hindrance technostressors interacting with each other. Also, the results demonstrate that using challenge technostressors helps to mitigate the experience of hindrance technostressors, while the absence of challenge technostressors amplifies the experience of hindrance technostressors. Coping mechanisms, such as adopting a positive attitude towards the system and self-created support, mitigate the experience of hindrance technostress. This study concludes that the experience of technostress is not only determined by the individual technostressors, but also by the interaction between technostressors caused by the elderlycare professionals that actively navigate these stressors.
