Abstract

The present study is an exploratory study of the applicability of motion energy analysis (MEA) in a naturalistic therapeutic setting where we follow 6 children with communication problem during their treatment sessions. The therapy under scrutiny is based on the principle that if children fail to learn to synchronize in a healthy manner, by either being almost always out- or almost always in-sync, behavioural problems arise. MEA is a recently developed observer-independent procedure, that uses differences in grey-scale pixels for detecting frame-by-frame changes in pre-defined regions. MAE was used to collect data on the movement intensity of the client and the therapist. The MEA data was further analyzed with cross recurrence quantification analyses (CRQA). CRQA measures were compared to global treatment goals and we found that MEA is a viable instrumental tool in measuring the synchronization of nonverbal communication in a naturalistic therapeutic setting.
