Abstract
This thesis looks at two musical adaptations, Six and &Juliet, in terms of modernisation and feminism. It investigates the different ways in which both adaptations have been adjusted to modern-day audiences, and what this results in. Additionally, it joins the discussion on whether either of these shows are feminist. It answers the question on whether Six and &Juliet are feminist, and how this was achieved. It does so by comparing and contrasting both adaptations, as well as using secondary sources on adaptation theory and feminist theory. These sources are applied to all the various aspects of musical theatre, as the only way to properly analyse musical theatre is to cover the entire scope of the medium. The analysis shows that through modernising the adaptations, they resonate more with a wider, and modern-day audience. Furthermore, both adaptations are feminist in every sense of the word, as they give the female characters full agency. More detailed research should be done on the songs and individual characters in Six and &Juliet, as well as research on musical adaptations in general.
