Abstract

This thesis has as its main research question: To what extent and under what conditions does listening, in the case of contemplative listening, contribute to the clarification of spirituality? Presently, formulation of clear descriptions of unique spiritual care interventions is lacking in both the study of spiritual care and its profession. What, for example, qualifies listening as a spiritual intervention? This thesis is an empirical descriptive analysis in the form of a case-study that analyzes seven recorded and transcribed contemplative listening sessions. It does so through both a theoretical framework of listening and listening skills, and of spiritual themes and spiritual perspectives. It analyzes the listening skills used in these sessions by the listener, the spiritual themes spoken about by the speaker/respondent, and from what spiritual perspectives – and their relation. Contemplative listening was found to – under certain conditions and by using particular listening skills – contribute to the explication of spirituality.
