Abstract
This report summarizes a study commissioned by Staatsbosbeheer to raise young adults’ feeling of
connectedness to nature, in order to get them to go into nature more often. A nature-focused
mindfulness meditation raised young adults’ connectedness to nature, but a clear effect on outdoor
behavior was not found.
In consideration of Staatsbosbeheer’s goals to connect people with nature and to promote public
well-being, it is alarming to see that younger age groups go outside relatively little. Nature’s positive
effect on health and well-being is well documented in scientific literature, and so is the negative
effect of being disconnected from it. This study was therefore set up to reconnect young adults with
nature.
