Abstract
The aim of this study was to design an intervention aimed at increasing self-control
among high-school students, in order to enhance their ability to resist smartphone temptation
while doing school-related tasks. First, the study measures the relationship between self control and smartphone usage. Subsequently, the study measures the effectiveness of a self control video intervention which is based on High-Level Construal and Implementation
Intentions, implemented in a self-deployed or an other-deployed manner. Last, the study
measures whether the effectiveness of the self-control video intervention on self-control
depends on high-school student’s metacognitive skills (c.q.: planning, monitoring,
regulating). The study uses a pre-measurement and a post-measurement to collect data. The
sample of the study consisted of 32 high-school students. Results show a negative
relationship between self-control and smartphone usage. Both self-control video interventions
(self-deployed versus other-deployed) had no significant effect on self-control. Due to low
internal validity of items that were aimed at measuring metacognitive skills, the moderating
effect of metacognitive skills was not interpreted. Practical and theoretical implications as
well as alternative explanations and suggestions for future research are discussed.
