Abstract

This thesis aims at evaluating the effect of participatory game theory interventions on the individual’s intention to collaborate and their perspectives within the Dutch dairy production system. To point out the potential of game theory interventions to enhance collaborative efforts and sustainability, this study used a qualitative strategy approach. It included a participatory game theory intervention with key stakeholders within the Dutch dairy production system, supported by interviews and pre-and post-tests. The use of game concepts during the intervention, including the Multi-Issue game, Volunteers Dilemma, and Cascade game, supported discussions and the identification of necessary actions for a more sustainable and collaborative Dutch dairy production system. The intervention facilitated shifts in stakeholder perspectives on sustainability and their intention to collaborate in decision-making. Stakeholders showed a diversity in perspectives on sustainability prior to the intervention but shifted towards an increased focus on continuous dialogues and communication, long-term goals, and collaboration. Three indicators, including attitude towards collaboration, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control were used in a pre-and post-test to measure and assess individual intention to collaborate prior and after the participatory game theory intervention, showing improvements in the belief in the value of collaboration and understanding of collaborative benefits. This study presents empirical evidence on the positive effect of participatory game theory interventions on individual intention to collaborate and perspectives on sustainability. It provides a structured approach for evaluating participatory game theory interventions and the contribution of such interventions to facilitate collaboration within the dynamic and complex context of the Dutch dairy production system.
