Abstract

This thesis analyzes far-right rhetoric that can be found on 4Chan. Most scholars today focus on populist politicians by using a top-down approach. In this thesis, a bottom-up approach will be utilized. In the end, the thesis will have answered the question: How does analyzing individuals engaging with populist politicians and disinformation through a bottom-up approach on the platform 4Chan offer deeper insights into the impact and reach of far-right rhetoric in the Netherlands and the United States? In the first chapter, populist politics will be outlined and conceptualized. In the second chapter, the focus will be shifted towards disinformation and conspiracies, and the bottom-up approach will be used to determine what factors contribute to people choosing to believe disinformation. The third chapter will dive into far-right platforms to analyze how far-right rhetoric resonates on these platforms and how contributors use populist rhetoric spread by politicians and vice versa. Central through this thesis will be the transatlantic context of the far-right, as this thesis will show that the far-right movement displays a transatlantic nationalism.
