Abstract

This paper examines digital nomadism in the context of state visa policies. In response to the growing trend of digital nomadism, governments have introduced digital nomad visas, yet there is considerable variation in their accessibility across countries. Thailand, a favourite destination among digital nomads, exemplifies this complexity: its digital nomad visa is inaccessible to the average digital nomad, forcing them to navigate country’s restrictive visa policies. How such policies influence digital nomads’ experiences and navigation tactics remains largely unexplored in current literature. To address this gap, this paper investigates these dynamics within Thailand. It utilizes a case study approach that integrates desk research with field interviews conducted among digital nomads in Thailand. The findings reveal that while Thailand’s visa policies initially present significant challenges, digital nomads adeptly employ various strategies to overcome these obstacles and maintain their desired lifestyles. The paper concludes with a call for comparative research across countries with differing visa regimes to deepen understanding and inform more supportive policy frameworks.
