Abstract
In the 1950s and 1960s Flevoland was created to accommodate population overflow from the Randstad region. Urban planning, particularly in Almere, aimed to address housing needs. The current situation highlights demographic trends, a slowdown in the labor market, and challenges in housing and transportation infrastructure. The research aims to investigate and propose strategies for employment and commuting challenges in Flevoland, emphasizing the importance of addressing spatial inequalities for regional economic development and resident well-being. The literature review and theoretical framework delves into the Dutch context of planned cities, focusing on Almere and its evolution. It explores the utopian and dystopian aspects, production of space, and spatial injustice. The results begin with an exploration of the initial planning of Flevoland, highlighting the conceptualization of its development and subsequent challenges in achieving intended outcomes, particularly in areas like Lelystad. The discussion extends to the current infrastructure of Flevoland, examining residents' utilization of this infrastructure through commuting patterns. Additionally, the chapter delves into the job market in Flevoland, addressing the phenomenon of residents working outside the province and ongoing efforts to address this issue. Key themes include the need for balanced development, the evolving landscape of mobility, and the imperative of addressing socio-economic disparities while striving for sustainable growth. The region's predominantly logistics and low-skilled labor market, coupled with commuting patterns to neighboring cities, highlights the need for improved spatial planning and upskilling initiatives. Despite challenges, Flevoland presents opportunities for innovation and growth, requiring a holistic approach that considers the interplay between economic policies, infrastructure development, and evolving employment patterns.
