Abstract

Photography is often considered to be an objective medium, especially in the context of news photography. This is, however, complicated by the framing of an image as well as concepts such as lateness and liveness. The ways in which an image is circulated, and the cultural background of the audience viewing the picture, changes its reading. Media coverage of abortion protests is an example how different forms of circulation affect the imagery. In this thesis the research question “How can we understand the construction of photographic objectivity in printed newspapers in the 1990s and the images circulated in present day social media?” was investigated using abortion protests as a case study.
