Abstract
This thesis creates new perspectives within the gender research concerning Het verdriet van België (The Sorrow of Belgium) by shying away from traditional analysing methods and incorporating modern gender theories instead. By combining the method of feminist literary criticism with the theories of Judith Butler, Gwennie Debergh, Hélène Cixous and Jacques Lacan, amongst others, a theoretical framework was built. This enabled the analysis of the influences of the social constructions of matriarchy or patriarchy on the gender construction of the nuns, Baekelmans, Constance Seynaeve and Madam Laura and whether these change during the progress of the story.
