Abstract

Temporary initiatives on former industrial areas in inner cities have been on the rise in recent years. These areas are often abandoned and have a characteristic appearance, which creates a unique atmosphere for festivals, markets or other events, that attract a diverse group of individuals and activities. As these initiatives flourish, it becomes paramount to understand how key actors involved in these temporary use projects envision the future of the area and how their perspectives shape the local urban environment. This research focuses on two cases, Treehouse NDSM in Amsterdam and RAW-Gelände in Berlin and makes use of a qualitative methodological approach thru semi-structured interviews and observations. The research is separated into six different concepts, temporary (re)use, Urban regeneration, Creative placemaking, Community engagement, Space as engagement and Gentrification. Both cases show that the importance of creative entrepreneurs has played a crucial role in the revitalization of the environment and also show that participation of local entrepreneurs- and inhabitants is made possible through different forms of approaching.
