Abstract

This thesis examines the concept of the spatialization of memory, as explored by public monuments in the divided city of Mitrovica in northern Kosovo. The primary focus is on how conflicting versions of the past and divisive heritages between the ethnic Albanians and Serbs are exacerbated. The aim of the research is to analyse the ruptures in the symbolic landscape of memory, exploring how these narratives manifest and interact with each other within the spatial context. Based on literature studies, interviews, and observations, I argue that the postwar monuments erected in Mitrovica serve to reinforce the division and antagosnism between the two ethnic groups, presenting selective and opposing versions of ethnic heritage. This is demonstrated by exploring three main case studies: the Prince Lazar monument, the Isa Boletini monument and the Miners’ Monument. Ultimately, the study’s findings contribute to our understandig of the interplay between cultural heritage, space, and memory in divided cities. Keywords: monumental space, post-war reconstruction, Prince Lazar, Isa Boletini, Miners’ Monument, divided city
