Abstract
Engineering firms play a key role in the construction chain, they often decide what spatial object will be built, how the spatial object will be built and how often the spatial object needs to be maintained. The execution of their designs and advises are so called scope 3 downstream activities of engineering firms. Many large engineering firms in the Dutch construction sector are developing voluntary emission reduction policies for these type of activities. This master thesis researched the motivations behind this development and to what extent the firms policies are adhered.
Literature research and a survey uncovered these motivations. The results show that in general the societal responsibility, environmental responsibility and the legal aspects factors have contributed more than the profit certainty and business continuity factors. Considering individual factors, the reputation of the firm is most important. Followed by changing social norms, obligations from the client and pressure within the firm.
To what extent the developed policy is adhered depends on who is the client of the engineering firm. When the client is a public organisation, engineering firm could step off from their own policy. In these cases engineering firms may argue that the execution is based on democratic processes.
