Abstract
In this project, the goal is to give design recommendations for a virtue-ethics centred chatbot that can stimulate self-confidence in students. Self-confidence is defined as virtue and the stakeholders are identified. Theories from psychology about how self-confidence can be stimulated are used to inform the contents of the chatbot. Self-confidence in specific situations related to academic performance are focussed on in the design of the chatbot. Value sensitive and virtue practice design are discussed, and an alternative approach to the design process is proposed. This proposed design process includes the following steps to make the process more concrete: translation from virtues into character traits, behaviour and design recommendations. With these steps, the chatbot that cultivates self-confidence in students, is sketched. The following functions are included: goal-setting, planning and reflecting on past events. All functions need user input, and can assist the user in different situations (for example public speaking or studying for an exam) that are important to academic performance.
