Abstract
This study aims to underline the relationship between contemporary Austen adaptations and postfeminism. This study addresses whether the depiction of femininity, masculinity and wedlock in the adaptation of Persuasion aligns with postfeminist ideas about gender and wedlock and whether the adaptation has preserved the nature of the legacy of Jane Austen. This thesis does a close analysis of scenes of the film and analyses these with the help of postfeminist theories, postfeminist film studies, and Austen adaptation studies. This thesis concludes that the adaptation has incorporated postfeminist views on femininity, masculinity, and wedlock in this adaptation to appeal to contemporary female audiences while preserving elements of Austen’s source text. More research is needed to establish the relationship between postfeminism and adaptation studies. Keywords: Adaptation Studies; Jane Austen; Postfeminism; Gender; Wedlock
