Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the barriers and facilitating factors of continuous active participation in Learning Communities. Continuous participation results in continuous knowledge-sharing. This is examined by a comparative case study (study one) and a single-case-study (study two). Study one explores the concepts ‘motivation to continuously actively participate’, ‘Learning Community’, ‘barriers’ and ‘facilitating factors’. The data was recorded, transcribed and coded. In study two, a Learning Community about leadership was started. Interviews were conducted before the first Learning Community and after the second. Overall can be concluded that the motivation to participate were individual emotional benefits, individual intellectual benefits, community-related considerations and normative considerations. Examples of barriers are online meetings, absence due to personal reasons/other-appointments, preparation time, unpleasant atmosphere and uninteresting subject. Examples of facilitating factors are format – intervision, mutual support, face-to-face meetings, planning the meetings well-in-advance, interesting subject and recognition of the issue. Facilitating factors stimulate continuous active participation and by avoiding barriers, the participant’s motivation to actively participate will not decrease. Practical implications are provided to strengthen the participant’s motivation to continuously participate. Future research should focus on whether or not the barriers and facilitating factors can be appointed to a specific form of motivation.
