Abstract
In this research, the framing of nuclear energy will be analyzed in Dutch media before and amidst the energy crisis to investigate the possible influence of the crisis. The aim of this study is to understand the possible impact of the energy crisis on framing. The energy crisis brought hardship for Dutch citizens due to the impact of COVID-19 and the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war. One of the options that is considered is nuclear power, which is the focal point of this study. Media framing can shape public opinion, which influences policy decisions and acceptance of the future transformation of energy systems. The theoretical foundation is constructed by using the combined classical framing theories of Gamson & Modigliani (1989) and Entman (1993), which, together with the nine key nuclear frames of Vossen (2020), shape the theoretical foundation of this study. The role of crises is factored in to shape the conceptual framework that guides the analysis of Dutch media. The nuclear frames will be identified through the use of the software LexisNexis, which analyzes media reports ranging from 2019 to 2023 and incorporates the four largest Dutch news outlets: AD, De Volkskrant, NRC and De Telegraaf.
