Abstract

Sustainable transitions are complex, long-term, processes which involves multiple actors on multiple scales that refer to large-scale societal changes, deemed necessary to solve ‘grand societal challenges’ (Loorbach, et al. 2017). The process is often caricatured by the ongoing fight between the dominant regime and the alternative niche who are under pressure by the socio-technical landscape (Geels, 2011). Transition intermediaries such as Impact Hub are embedded between the regime and niche and have the opportunity to play an important role during these transitions. However, little research is available on how these intermediaries influence the niche-regime movements during sustainable transitions. To understand the influence of a transitions intermediary, Impact hub is used as a research subject. Two teams are analysed through qualitative research. Data was collected through triangulation of document analysis, interviews, observation and an internship. The study found that Impact Hub contributes to niche-regime movements by playing a networking role. The network provides like-minded niche and regime actors with a one-stop hub to solving tensions and barriers in the regime. The one-stop hub approach potentially reduces the time needed for sustainable transitions in the long run.
