Abstract
This research uses a case study to discover how community characteristics influence the individual innovation adoption process. The community is a new organizational form that is increasingly used to solve problems outside the traditional boundaries of a single organization. Existing literature on adoption is focused on traditional organizational forms. However, the adoption process has not yet been studied in the organizational form of a community. This qualitative research is conducted to gain more knowledge about the community characteristics and to better understand how these characteristics influence the adoption process in this new organizational form. Data is collected from a sample of twelve respondents and is analyzed by a theoretical framework derived from the community literature. The results show that the community characteristics are flexible, organic, informal, and self-organized. The adoption process is voluntary for community members and the results show that shared purpose, intrinsic motivation, and expectations of future gains have a positive influence on adoption. On the other hand, the results show that the adoption process of community members is complicated as it requires the joint integration of multiple actors and organizations. There is almost no formalization or centralization in the community. This makes the implementation phase of the adoption process challenging. As a result, low engagement levels, unclear directions, minimal organizational support, and insufficient coordination lead to a low adoption rate of the tool.
