Abstract
The aim of the present thesis is to qualitatively explore: how the corporate social responsibility(CSR) practices of Staatsolie are influenced by corruption caused by institutional voids. Staatsolie is Suriname’s leading oil and gas company, and one of the local front runners when it comes to CSR. By conducting semi-structured interviews on location at Staatsolie, the present study was able to assess the institutional climate and corruption within Suriname, and the influence it has on Staatsolie CSR practices. The results of the study conclude that the CSR practices of Staatsolie have been marginally influenced by corruption, while institutional voids have been one of the main drivers for the CSR investments of Staatsolie. Certain voids in institutions were so significant, that it could result into damaging current and future business activities. Resulting in Staatsolie conducting CSR investments more out of necessity instead of generosity. The present study provides new insights to the very limited business research in Suriname, by stating how the institutions in Suriname are influencing CSR practices. This could also be a starting point for additional research about CSR practices in the whole of Suriname or other developing nations.
