Abstract
On 1 October of 2017 a referendum was held about the secession of Catalonia, which was deemed illegal and was met with great violence. This is just one event in Catalonia’s history of struggling for independence. The referendum clearly sparked a division between those for and those against Catalan independence. This research focuses on the reason behind this division; Identity and the relation with Space. The space this thesis focuses on is Barcelona. Barcelona is the capital and has a great influx of foreign and domestic immigrants which influence the city. What traces can be found throughout the city of Barcelona that make it the capital of Catalonia? Through qualitative research methods we try to delve into the Catalan identity from a grassroots perspective. It shows that Catalan people see themselves differently from other regions in Spain. The main difference is the language, but also differences in culture. Catalan people see the Catalan flag, the unique architecture and cultural events as symbols of the Catalan identity in Barcelona and that makes that they attach value to the city. They do not identify as someone from Barcelona, but do recognize the city as a place where their Catalan identity is manifested.
