THE BEHAVIOURAL INTENTION TO USE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES: Utilizing ‘UTAUT2’ to gain insight in the behavioural intention of Dutch driver license holders to use autonomous vehicles in future use cases

Abstract
Autonomous vehicles (SAE levels 3, 4 and 5) could potentially transition society, compared to cars on the road today. The objective of this research is to contribute to the implementation of autonomous vehicles in Dutch society, by providing insight on the intention of Dutch driver license holders to use an autonomous vehicle, in order to support future policy making. To which extent have Dutch driver license holders the intention to use an autonomous vehicle? Based on the Extending Unified Theory of the Use and Acceptance of Technology (UTAUT2), a research model with five independent and two moderating variables is developed to measure Behavioural Intention. A quantitative survey regarding three future use cases (Autonomous Motorway Vehicle, Personal Autonomous Vehicle, Autonomous Taxi Vehicle) was conducted amongst 385 Dutch driver license holders. The results show that all three use cases have two shared conclusions: Performance Expectancy and Hedonic Motivation have a significant positive effect on Behavioural Intention and therefore should be considered to be taken into account when developing future policy to implement autonomous vehicles in Dutch society. The effect of the other (moderating) variables differ per use case and should therefore be considered per use case when developing future policy to implement autonomous vehicles in Dutch society.
