Abstract
This dissertation examines the ways in which the Van Lymborch Brothers use the portrayal of clothing as a tool to identify certain groups of people and assign meaning to them. It focuses on the portrayal of Eastern clothing, Jewish clothing and historical costume, and looks at the ways in which these types of clothing are portrayed through analysing the images within the Bible Moralisée, Belles Heures and Très Riches Heures manuscripts (1402-1416). I argue that the clothing depicted in the works of the Van Lymborch Brothers represents a complicated sign system used to relay intricate ideas regarding identity, morality, and temporality, and that a multivalent use of clothing creates diverse meanings dependent on the context in which the clothing is presented.
